23-year-old male suspect in stolen truck dies after shooting in Federal Way

The following is a press release from the King County Sheriff’s Office.

A 1989 Ford F250pickup truck driven by the suspect was reported to Auburn Police as stolen on Aug. 15.  The owner saw it about 5 p.m. yesterday (Aug. 31st), recognized it as his, and call the Federal Way Police Department.  (However the plates had been switched.)  The owner followed it to the Walmart Parking lot at 34520 – 16th Ave S. in Federal Way.

Two FWPD officers sat watching the truck and a man got into the truck about 5:25 p.m..   The two officers converged on the vehicle in the marked patrol cars.  The driver started the truck and moved out of the parking space, through the parking lot.  The officers followed with their emergency lights activated, and eventually their sirens.  The driver didn’t stop and went onto the roadway, turning south onto 16th Ave South.

The truck continued on 16th Ave S., drove into on-coming traffic at one point, and slowed but did not stop for a red light at S. 348th and 16th Ave S.  The pursuit then continued.  (At this point 16th Ave S. became Enchanted Parkway.)

The truck turned east onto S. 360th St.

During the chase a PIT maneuver was tried twice.  The second one at about S. 360th and 25th Place S. was successful and the truck went off the roadway.  The shooting occurred shortly thereafter.

The driver died at Harborview Medical Center.  He was 23 years old with a Tacoma address.  He had an outstanding felony warrant and a misdemeanor warrant, both for larceny charges, as well as a DUI warrant.
